UPDATE: Pedestrian in crosswalk hit, killed by small RTC bus at Sahara and Eastern

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- An 55-year-old woman has died after being hit by a small RTC bus Tuesday morning, Las Vegas police say.

It happened at the intersection of Sahara and Eastern avenues around 9:30 a.m. The roads were closed to traffic for a couple of hours, but reopened around 1:30 p.m.

According to Metro police, the woman was in the crosswalk, crossing north on Eastern when she was hit by an RTC bus -- a 2018 Ford Econoline bus -- turning right onto Sahara from Eastern. The bus was northbound on Eastern and had a green light when it turned.

"A collision occurred when the Ford failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian and
struck the pedestrian with its right side," according to the LVMPD Traffic Bureau. Police were able to review the collision because it was captured on video.

"The impact knocked the pedestrian to the ground," according to police. "The rear tires of the Ford subsequently ran over the pedestrian."

She was transported to Sunrise Hospital's trauma unit, but later died.

"There's a possibility that the bus had obstructions, that the bus driver could not see the pedestrian that was standing there at the crosswalk waiting to cross," said Lt. Gregory Munson, LVMPD.

RTC will conduct their own investigation with the driver. He was identified as Steven Kooser, 68. The driver and a passenger in the bus did not report any injuries.

Metro's investigation remains open.

The pedestrian’s death marks the 43rd traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for 2021.
