Police: Man Robs Bank then Calls 911 to Report It

A New Mexico man is under arrest after Metro Police say he robbed a Las Vegas bank then called 911 to report what he did.

According to police, Matthew Romero, 41 of New Mexico, approached a teller in the US Bank near Sahara Avenue and Rancho Drive at about 2 p.m. Friday. He gave the teller a note, which stated that it was a bank robbery and that he had a knife.

The teller gave Romero about $1,000 from the cash draw and hit the silent alarm. Romero took the money and left the bank. However, just outside the bank Romero called police to tell them what he had done.

During an interview, Romero told officers that he was distraught about his recent divorce and the medication he takes for his mental health issues was not working. He came to Las Vegas for a few days and stayed at the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino.

He told police he checked out of the hotel Friday and took a cab to the bank. He also said he picked a male teller in the bank because he didn't want to frighten a female.

Romero is facing charges of robbery with deadly weapon and burglary while possessing a deadly weapon.
