Redevelopment Meetings Scheduled for Public Input

The City of Las Vegas plans redevelopment work in two of its wards and wants input from the affected communities.

The city’s Redevelopment Agency (RDA) seeks to redevelop areas of Wards 3 and 5. The RDA uses new property taxes from new development to finance investment. Property owners have the option to opt out of being part of the redevelopment area expansion.

Three Las Vegas City Council seats are up for election beginning with Tuesday’s primary.

City residents living in Wards 2, 4 and 6 can vote for a candidate in seats held currently by Bob Beers, Stavros Anthony and Steve Ross, respectively. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Absentee ballots must be received by the City Clerk before 7 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.

Voters should check their sample ballots for their designated polling location or call the City Clerk at 229-6311 or the Clark County Registrar of Voters at 455-VOTE (8683).

Once polls close at 7 p.m., election results will be posted on the city’s website,www.lasvegasnevada.gov, and on the city’s government access television station, KCLV Cable Channel 2.

The presidential campaigns made the final push in the Las Vegas valley before Tuesday's election.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney sent his son Craig to southern Nevada Monday to rally supporters. He was joined by former Small Business Administration Administrator Hector Barreto and former Treasurer of the United States Rosario Marin.

The first stop was Romney's offices at 235 North Eastern Avenue. The second stop was the campaign's offices in Henderson.  

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has plans to make last-minute campaign stops in Ohio and Pennsylvania Tuesday. President Obama made stops in Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa on Monday.

If you haven’t registered to vote in next month’s election, get to the mall this weekend.

County officials plan voter registration drives at several malls Saturday, the last day to register to vote without appearing in person at an Election Department office.

Voter registration applications will be taken all day at:

  • Las Vegas Outlet Center, 7400 South Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas
  • Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas
  • Galleria Mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road, Henderson
  • Meadows Mall, 4300 Meadows Lane, Las Vegas

After Saturday, anyone who wants to register to vote will have through Oct. 16 to appear in-person to either the County Election Center at 965 Trade Drive, Suite A in North Las Vegas, or the Election Department office at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas.

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- 8 News Now has learned the North Las Vegas jail is only days away from a possible takeover by Metro Police that could result in up to 100 layoffs.

Sources tell the I-Team the city of North Las Vegas is working out a deal that would close its jail and move about 170 inmates to the Las Vegas jail. The potential move would be necessary because of a $33 million dollar budget shortfall in North Las Vegas.

As attack ads hit the airwaves, Election Day is drawing near for the candidates in the Ward 2 Special Election for the Las Vegas City Council.

The election to replace Steve Wolfson, who was appointed as district attorney for Clark County, will take place Tuesday. On Special Election Day, registered Ward 2 voters can cast ballots at the following voting centers between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m:

  • Veterans Memorial Leisure Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive
  • Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
  • Vons, Boca Park, 820 S. Rampart Blvd.

Candidate Ric Truesdell recently began airing TV ads attacking fellow candidate Bob Beers for his votes as a state senator. Truesdell and Beers are the highest-profile names among the field of candidates.

Registration Deadline Fast Approaching for Special Election

 

If you’re not yet registered to vote in the upcoming City of Las Vegas special election, Saturday is your last chance to sign up.

All Ward 2 residents who wish to cast a ballot in the city’s Ward 2 Special Election – called to replace outgoing Councilman Steve Wolfson, who was appointed as Clark County District Attorney – have until Saturday to register to vote.

People who have not registered will be unable to vote during early voting, March 15 and 16, or on Special Election Day scheduled for March 20.
