Cat Group to Hold Spay-a-Thon Ahead of Kitten Season

A national organization is sponsoring a spay-a-thon in an effort to stop the explosion of unwanted kittens that happens in the spring.

Alley Cats Allies is sponsoring the event at the Heaven Can Wait Society of Las Vegas. Prior to the event, volunteers with the Clark County Community Cat Coalition will humanely trap about 200 stray or feral cats.

During the event Saturday, the cats will be spayed or neutered in one day using a state-of-the-art high volume technique. The cats will then be returned to their colony sites.

According to the group, the trap-neuter-return program is the most effective and humane way to reduce the population of feral cats.

The group is also using the event has a way to educate people about the importance of getting their cat spayed or neutered. In the spring, female cats go into heat and give birth to litters of kittens after only 63 days of pregnancy.
