Police: Man found dead in dumpster not suspicious

 LAS VEGAS --  Police say they have determined there is nothing suspicious about the body of a man found in a Dumpster at an apartment complex near Sahara Avenue and Durango Drive. 

The body was found Tuesday around 7 a.m. in the 8700 block of Starboard Drive off Durango Drive. Police say the man appears to be in his 70's and lived in the apartment complex. Police say his body had no visible signs of trauma and he may have died as a result of a medical episode.

A coroner will determine the cause of the man's death.

Man sentenced in deadly DUI hit-and-run crash

 LAS VEGAS -- A man who was drunk and left the scene after he hit and killed a construction worker in July was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday morning.

After he was arrested, Rafael Mendez-Sota told police he had drank as many as nine beers in the hours prior to the crash near Valley View Boulevard and Sahara Avenue. 

The construction worker, Robert Lee Lujan, was cutting asphalt in a bus lane when he was struck by Mendez-Sota.

FD: Bushes lit on fire cause $10K in damage

LAS VEGAS — The Clark County Fire Department said it was investigating bushes set on fire next to an apartment complex near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. Monday in the 3600 block of Van Dyke Avenue.

According to the fire department, when firefighters arrived, the fire had spread from the bushes and had entered the eaves and attic space of the building.

The fire was under control in 10 minutes and caused an estimated $10,000 in damages, the fire department said. 

Metro police were questioning three juveniles in connection with the fire, officials said. It was unclear if they were witnesses or if they were responsible for starting the blaze.

No one was hurt.









Man killed in shooting near Rainbow and Gowan ID'd

LAS VEGAS --  The Clark Coroner's Office office released the name of the man killed Thursday in a shooting near Rainbow Boulevard and Gowan Road.

Coroner officials said 62-year-old Michael O'Brien of Las Vegas died from a gun shot wound to the chest.

Metro Police said they have few clues in the shooting, but they said O'Brien got into a fight with another man near the garage door of a home
on Welsh Circle.

Authorities said after the shooting, the 62-year-old walked down the driveway where he collapsed in the cul-de-sac.

Judge hit by vehicle near Las Vegas courthouse

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Officials say a judge was hit by a car while walking to work at the Clark County Regional Justice Center.

Court spokeswoman Mary Ann Price says Judge Linda Bell was struck about 7:30 a.m. Friday in a crosswalk on Clark Street. Price says Bell was taken to the hospital.

Court staff were told the judge did not suffer any internal bleeding, just bumps and bruises.

Price says the suspect vehicle had out-of-state plates and was driving the wrong way.

Price described Bell as a great judge and a crucial person in court operations.

 

Report: Test security lax at Kelly Elementary

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County School District has released its extensive report into allegations of cheating at Matt Kelly Elementary School.

According to the 102-page report, the district agrees with Nevada Department of Education's investigation, which said that adults changed answers on the Criterion-Referenced Test or CRT but there no way to determine who did it.

The district says it cannot prove or disprove who is responsible, but it can say that the school did not have proper security for the tests.



Coroner: Foster father died of drug overdose

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Coroner's Office released the cause of death for the foster father who police say killed a 16-month-old girl in his care.

The coroner says Joaquin Juarez-Paez, 37, died from hydrocodone overdose and the manner of death was ruled a suicide. Hydrocodone is a common pain killer.

Juarez-Paez's wife found him unresponsive in a car outside their apartment in October. When she ran inside the apartment to get the keys to the car, she found the 16-month-old child, Michell Momox-Caselis dead in her crib, according to police.
