Coroner IDs downtown apartment fire victim

LAS VEGAS -- The woman who died from injuries sustained in the first fatal fire in city limits in more than a year has been identified as 66-year-old Sangwal McGinnis.

The downtown Las Vegas fire happened Tuesday just before 2 p.m. in the 300 block of S. Maryland Parkway

Firefighters said when they arrived to the scene, heavy flames could be seen shooting out of a window.

McGinnis was found lying on the floor as firefighters battled the blaze. Officials said the fire was under control within eight minutes of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue's arrival.

Firefighters said careless smoking is believed to be the cause. The fire started on a mattress.

There's an estimated $70,000 in damage, but it was contained to the living room and bedroom area, LVFR said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said the last fatal fire occurred on Sept. 27, 2013 in the city of Las Vegas. That fire was ruled accidental.

Fire officials said the city of Las Vegas went 557 days without a fire fatality.
