LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas valley teenager is about to take on the international stage in the world of ballet.

Monika Haczkiewicz is the only Nevadan who will be competing in the finals of the American Youth Grand Prix this month in New York City.

The love of dance has always been in this 17-year-old's blood. Her parents are long-time Cirque du Soleil performers on the show Mystere.

"When I was little, I always loved watching the show and watching them and I would think oh my God, it's so cool," she said.

Inspired by her mom and dad, Haczkiewicz started taking ballet at the age of three and immediately fell in love. Now she's about to take her passion and skills to compete in the finals of the prestigious American Youth Grand Prix, after taking second place in the senior division of regionals in Las Vegas last month.

"I feel it's been a real peak for me and I am so excited," Haczkiewicz said.

"That's why we are so excited for her," said Tara Foy, a ballet instructor. "She's the only dancer in Nevada to have been chosen."

Foy has been training Haczkiewicz for the past year.

She says Nevada is not known for generating world class ballerinas, but hopes that this young woman will change the trend.

"I am so honored that she's with me and I can take her to New York," Foy said. "It's so well deserved."

After completing high school at Las Vegas Academy, Haczkiewicz says she wants to join a ballet company in Seattle or San Francisco and then inspire young ballerinas in her hometown of Las Vegas so they can achieve their dream.

For now, Haczkiewicz is focused on the competition where she will be performing before ballet artistic directors from around the world. She's excited to represent her city.

"I want them to know that it is fun and it is beautiful and the end result is going to be really amazing," Foy said.

The finals for the Youth American Grand Prix is happening April 10 - 15 at the Lincoln Center in New York City.
