Suspect Arrested in Decorative Light Thefts

LAS VEGAS -- A suspect is under arrest in connection with the theft of decorative brass sidewalk lights.

According to the City of Las Vegas, Antwon Maurice Simmons, 31 of Las Vegas, turned himself in to Deputy City Marshal Investigators.

He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on several charges, including possession of stolen property, theft and removal of property to get scrap metal.

The lights were installed along Fourth Street between Colorado and Bridger avenues in the 1990s. In total, 147 lights were stolen. The cost of each light is estimated at $580, not including labor costs, city officials said.

Simmons' alleged accomplice, Michael Payne, was arrested and booked in connection with the thefts in July.

Simmons and Payne were trying to sell the brass pieces of the lights to several recyclers, officials said. One of those recyclers contacted authorities because they felt the pieces were suspicious.
