Dead Baby Body Found in Apartment Trash Bin

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating the discovery of a baby's body in a trash bin at an apartment complex.

According to police, the body was found Wednesday around 8 a.m. by a maintenance person at the Rancho Mesa Apartments. Police said it appears the child is between 3 months and 6 months old. The baby's race and gender have yet to be determined.

"It's just absolutely horrible," neighbor Jan Gunter said.

The complex is located in the 2800 block of N. Rancho Drive, between Cheyenne Avenue and Smoke Ranch Road. Homicide detectives are investigating. They canvassed the apartment complex and talked with residents.

"It's our intention to identify this child as soon as possible," aid Metro Lt. Ray Staiber

Because this baby is not a newborn, Metro police said it is possible the child was killed before being left in the trash. Although, the cause of death has not been determined, police want to remind parents there are other options to avoid abandoning a baby.

"There are services out here in the valley that can assist you with your child and taking care of that child if need be," Staiber said.

The state's Safe Haven law would not have applied to this baby because it only allows parents to legally leave a child with an emergency service provider within 30 days of the child's birth.

Brad Singletary, the director of Catholic Chairities Adoption Services, said his agency will work with any family who can't take care of a child.

"There are so many options than how it was handled today," he said.
