Hawaiian Places $66,200 Roulette Bet, Cashes In

A Hawaii man tested his luck Wednesday with an odd bet on even at the roulette table at Binion’s.

A few tense seconds later, he walked away with more than $132,000.

The 31-year-old man contacted Binion’s casino director Glenn Casale in advance to ask if he would take the unusual, one-shot $66,200 bet.

“It’s not every day you get a call from a guy who’s asking about that kind of wager,” Casale said. “After a few conversations I realized that this man was serious.  I discussed the situation with (owner) Terry Caudill, who said he would book the bet.”

Dressed in a shirt and tie with his wife next to him, the man – who asked to remain anonymous – pushed his huge stack of chips to rest on ‘even.’ Longtime Binion’s dealer Carlos Basaldua spun the wheel and put the ball in play and a crowd watched as it landed on ‘8.’

The man told Casale that he called eight casinos in Las Vegas, including several on the Strip, and that none of them would take a roulette bet of more than $20,000.

“We are in the gambling business, this is what we do,” said Caudill, owner of Binion’s Gambling Hall and the Four Queens Hotel & Casino. “It is somewhat unusual that he wanted to risk such a large amount. I consider these kinds of requests on a case-by-case basis. In this particular case, this was a man with a legitimate bet.  I congratulate him on his win.”

The man and his wife plan to use the money to put a down payment on a house.
