New Fire Station Holds Grand Opening Tuesday


A new fire station near downtown Las Vegas is set for a grand opening ceremony next week.

The city of Las Vegas will officially open a new fire station at 1888 Stella Lake St. to serve the Ward 5 community at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire Station 106 cost about $4 million to build. It is a 7,800-square-foot building where one engine and one rescue unit will be housed. Six paramedics, six firefighters, three captains and three engineers will be assigned to the station.

Opening ceremonies will include the traditional uncoupling of a fire hose, as well as tours of the new station. Refreshments will be served while supplies last.

A movie classic is on tap for the next free movie night in downtown Las Vegas.

“The Wizard of Oz” will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday in Huntridge Circle Park at 1251 S. Maryland Parkway. Residents are invited to bring blankets, folding chairs and picnic baskets and enjoy children’s activities starting at 7 p.m.

A food truck will be available at the event. Free popcorn and bottled water will be distributed while supplies last.

Family Events Next Week in Downtown Corridor


A series of family events is scheduled for next week in downtown Las Vegas.

Camp Corridor is conducted by Downtown Las Vegas Cultural Corridor members. The corridor’s museums, cultural organizations, and parks are offering a week of family fun for parents and kids. Times vary at each location so please call in advance for a list of activities and times.

The events run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10 through Saturday, July 14.

First Tuesday Features K-9 Unit


One of the most popular divisions at Metro Police will be the topic of discussion for the up-coming First Tuesday event.

Officers from Metro’s K-9 Unit will be at the area command centers to talk to people about what the unit does. The discussion is part of an outreach program by Metro. It opens its area command centers on the first Tuesday of every month to the public. Following the discussion about the K-9 Unit, citizens will be able to talk with officers assigned to their area.

Brews and Blues Festival Set for Saturday

Brews and Blues Festival Set for Saturday

The Springs Preserve will host the third annual Brews and Blues Festival this weekend.

The festival is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will feature several different craft beers from southern Nevada and around the country. The event will be headlined by Chicago-based guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks.

Advanced tickets are recommended. They are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Advanced ticket holders will be able to get into the venue at 3 p.m. All ticket holders will get a sampling glass when they enter the event. The festival is open to people 21 years and older.
