Tickets to Go On Sale for Big League Weekend


Big League Weekend returns to Cashman Field in March, giving fans a brief taste of Major League Baseball.

Individual game tickets for the exhibition games featuring the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs will go on sale at noon Monday, February 18 at the Cashman Field box office.

Tickets also can be purchased through Ticketmaster (1-800-745-3000www.ticketmaster.com). Ticketmaster outlets are located at some Smith’s Food & Drug stores. Beginning February 18, the Cashman Field box office will be open from noon – 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The following are the individual game ticket prices for the Rangers/Cubs games on Saturday-Sunday, March 16-17 at Cashman Field at 1:05 p.m.:

Young Poets Compete for Scholarship


Some of Clark County’s finest young poets will square off Tuesday for the chance to win a scholarship.

Thirty students selected from more than 1,000 entries across Clark County will perform their finest poetry recitations in the Poetry Out Loud semi-finals. The participants represent 15 local schools, and the winners will advance to the Nevada finals in Reno on March 16 to compete for a $1,000 scholarship and $1,000 for their school’s literary programs.

Poetry Out Loud encourages kids to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation. The state winner will compete at the national level in Washington D.C. for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes.

The event takes from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Charleston Library Theater, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.

Gala to Benefit Local Foster Children

Fostering Southern Nevada, The Adoption Exchange and Clark County will partner Saturday on an event to benefit foster children.

The 2nd Annual Open Your Heart Gala will take place at the Palace Station from 6-8 p.m. Saturday. Honorees will include Wells Fargo bank and a foster child who will be awarded the first-ever Game Changer Scholarship. The scholarship will provides foster care children with the opportunity to participate in activities such as summer camps and college tours.

Civil Rights Movement Recognized in Display


A monument dedicated to the civil right movement will be unveiled later this month at Palm Downtown Mortuary.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, and will feature the Civil Air Patrol’s Color Guard, as well as performances by the Las Vegas Mass Choir.

The Garden of Dreams is intended to help educate about and mark the struggles and successes of the journey toward equal rights.

Each year, Palm Downtown Mortuary and Cemetery will reward a local student showing a “demonstrated commitment to community service and the ideals of freedom, equality and justice” with a scholarship to be used at a Nevada institution of higher learning.

The Garden of Dreams physically incorporates the struggles and successes of the civil rights movement with several unique features.

Historic District to be Recognized at Event


Las Vegas city officials will recognize the Berkley Square Historic District at an event Feb. 9.

Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow and Las Vegas artist Joseph Watson will unveil and dedicate 34 banners that will recognize the district at noon. The unveiling, part of the city’s celebration of Black History Month in February, will take place at the corner of F Street and Leonard Avenue.

Parking is available at the Elks Lodge at 600 W. Owens Ave. The banners will be located on the existing streetlight poles in the area bounded by D Street, Owens Avenue, H Street and Byrnes Avenue.

United Way Tax Help Season Kicks Off


United Way of Southern Nevada will host two major tax prep assistance events over the next couple of months.

The organization recently kicked off its season of tax help, including Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites that will open starting Monday.

Households with an income of less than $51,000 in 2012 can receive free tax preparation and may be eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refund of up to $5,891.
