Senior Talent Competition Registration Opens


Calling all talented local seniors: your skills are wanted for a performance contest.

Registration for the 2013 Senior Idol Talent Showcase auditions is under way for the 10th annual competition that will be held at 3 p.m June 13 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.

This showcase is for performers 50 years and older, and includes numerous categories for individuals and groups to compete in. Categories include, but not limited to, singing, dance, musical instruments and comedy.

To get a registration packet, contact the Las Vegas Senior Center at 229-6454, or stop by at 451 E. Bonanza Road. Packets must be completed and returned to the Las Vegas Senior Center by 6 p.m. April 26. Invitations to audition will be mailed out, and auditions will be held May 8 and 9 at the Las Vegas Senior Center.

Springs Preserve Hosting EggStravaganza Saturday


The Springs Preserve will be welcoming spring with its annual EggStravaganza Celebration Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Springs Preserve will host a family-friendly event that will include an egg hunt, bunny petting pen, pictures with the Easter Bunny, games, crafts and music.

Tickets are $10, which includes all activities but pictures with the Easter Bunny. Adults are admitted for free. Springs Preserve members get $2 off each admission.

With tickets to the EggStravaganza, families can go to the all Springs Preserve exhibits, Nevada State History Museum, and Nature Exchange for half off the general admission price.

Tickets to Saturday's event can be purchased at the Springs Preserve box office or online at springspreserve.org.

Downtown Streets Closed for Mint 400

Downtown Streets Closed for Mint 400


Several streets downtown are closed and will stay closed until 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The closures and detours are part of the annual Mint 400 off-road race. The race weekend will include several parties and events planned for downtown. The actual race will be take place in the desert area between Las Vegas and Jean Saturday.

Free Legal Seminars Targeted to Business Owners


A downtown law firm will partner with the city of Las Vegas to hold a series of free seminars on legal topics.

Small claims court will be the topic of the March 19 seminar, one in a series from the city Lionel Sawyer & Collins. The seminars focus on legal issues for businesses and will be held at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 9:30 a.m.

City Looking for Participants for Helldorado Parade


The city of Las Vegas is now accepting applications for the 2013 Helldorado evening parade.

The city is looking for floats, equestrian units, marching bands, performers, car and motorcycle clubs and other type of entry will be welcome.

The entries should be themed on the traditions of past Helldorado Days, what the celebration means then and now or the birthday of the city of Las Vegas.

The parade is set for 5 p.m. Saturday, May 18 and should last about two hours. The parade route will head north on Fourth Street from Gass to Ogden avenus.

There is no fee to participate. An application can be downloaded from the city's website at lasvegasnevada.gov/helldorado. They must be submitted by Monday, April 29. Only the first 120 qualified applications will be accepted.

Free Tax Prep Help Available This Weekend


Tax preparation for struggling and lower-income households is available for free this weekend.

Households with an income of less than $51,000 in 2012 can receive free tax preparation and may be eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refund of up to $5,891.

In addition to more than 30 VITA sites across the Las Vegas Valley that will be open January 28 through April 15, United Way is organizing two large-scale tax preparation days:

In 2010 through 2012, the “Earn It Keep It Save It” collaborative prepared more than 11,500 tax returns and provided more than $15.3 million in tax refunds back into the community.

Workshop on Opening Small Business Upcoming

City officials will partner with a community organization to host a workshop aimed at those interested in opening a small business.

The city of Las Vegas and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women will present the event on opening your own business from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Las Vegas City Hall, 495 S. Main Street.

The event will include information from the city’s Business Licensing Department, Economic and Urban Development Department, Nevada Secretary of State, and SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground.
