Celtic Gathering and Highland Games This Weekend

A bit of the old country will take over Floyd Lamb State Park this weekend with the 8th annual Celtic Gathering and Highland Games.

The Las Vegas Celtic Society is hosting the games starting 9 a.m. Saturday. The event will include traditional Scottish heavy sporting events like hammer throwing, but there will also be games for kids, traditional Scottish and Irish dancing and music, whiskey and ale tastings, and drum major and piping band contests.

There are also events planned for Fremont Street Experience, including an attempt to set the world record for caber throwing. The toss is set for 8:10 p.m. Friday in front of the 1st Street Stage. Thirty-two cabers, long poles weighing around 157 pounds, will be thrown in an attempt to set a record.
