Las Vegas Elementary School Receives National Recognition | Education & Schools
LAS VEGAS -- Walter Bracken Academy School has been named to receive a 2013 Blue Ribbon National School designation from the United States Department of Education.
Bracken, which specializes in science, technology, engineering, arts and math, was the only school in Clark County to be selected for the award.
In order for a school to receive a Blue Ribbon designation, it must achieve in the top 10 percent of its state tests. It must also have at least 40 percent of its students from disadvantaged backgrounds make significant improvement on state tests.
"We are so honored to receive recognition for our innovative program that is helping our students to achieve," said principal Katie Decker. "This is truly an award that helps us show what a school can achieve with everyone working together."
Bracken is located on the east side of the Las Vegas valley. About 30 percent of the students have limited English proficiency and about 60 percent qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch program.
