National Night Out Next Tuesday

The city of Las Vegas will mark National Night Out Tuesday, Aug. 2, with a back-to-school fair and community celebration from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Cashman Middle School, 4622 W. Desert Inn Road.

School supplies will be distributed to children ages 5 to 16 and light refreshments will be served, while supplies last. Low-cost vaccinations will be available. No child will be refused vaccination for inability to pay, but parents must bring each child’s shot records.

The Las Vegas Fire & Rescue department, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) units, a shredding truck and community vendors also will participate. The event is sponsored by city of Las Vegas Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian, Keeping Everyone’s Eyes on the Neighborhood, Metro Police, Target, Anthem Institute and Terrible Herbst Oil Company. For more information, call 229-6405.

Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out is celebrated annually in communities all across the United States. Residents in an estimated 15,000 communities, in all 50 states – more than 37 million people – are expected to participate in this year’s 28th annual event. National Night Out is designed to:

  • Heighten crime- and drug-prevention awareness
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts
  • Strengthen police/community relationships
  • Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and working together to prevent crime
