Most students are happy to be out of school for the summer, but for many children being out of school means they do not have access to nutritious food.

Communities In Schools of Nevada is one of several local charities helping to fill that gap by providing food through the Summer Food Service Program.

The nonprofit is hosting two sites that offer free meals and snacks through August 9. One location is the Archie Grant Center for Academic Excellence, 1720 Searles Avenue and the other is Marble Manor Community Center, 912 Gerson Avenue.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided, along with nutritious snacks, free of charge. The community centers also offer programs and tutor sessions to help kids with academics during the summer months.

The program is spearheaded by Three Square Food Bank in a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The acceptance and participation requirements for the program and activities are the same for all students.

Communities In Schools of Nevada works in dozens of schools around the state to provide support for students to keep them from dropping out. The group provides resources for everything from food, clothing and health care to academic development.
