Metro Invites Community to Award Celebration

Metro Police is inviting the community to celebrate a prestigious international policing award it won for a project with community members.

The department’s Bolden Area Command won the Webber Seavy Award for its Safe Village Initiative. The project combined the efforts of officers and citizens to broker gang ceasefires and bring the community together to stop violence. Metro Police beat out 2,100 other police agencies from around the world to win the award.

“We didn’t wait for a community to change, our officers made change come to the community,” said Sheriff Douglas Gillespie. “Officers at our area commands are the neighborhood experts and used some initiative to bring stakeholders together and help improve the quality of life of West Las Vegas residents.”

The ceremony and barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Matt Kelly Elementary School, 1900 J Street.
