Zip Line Attraction Donates to the Animal Foundation

A zip line attraction at the Fremont Street Experience is donating its proceeds from Wednesday afternoon and evening to a local animal shelter.

Flightlinez will give money made until midnight Wednesday to the Animal Foundation, 655 North Mojave Road. The foundation operates the largest animal shelter in Nevada. Rides are $15 until 6 p.m. Rides after 6 p.m. are $20. Flightlinez is in the heart of the Fremont Street Experience.

CSN Students, Pet Group Work Together on Overpopulation

 

Students from the College of Southern Nevada are teaming up with a local pet organization to control the overpopulation problem.

CSN’s Veterinary Technician Program is working with Heaven Can Wait Spay and Neuter Clinic on the sterilization of feral cats and pets from low-income homes.

Although the college’s Charleston campus includes an animal surgery clinic where students provide a service to the community and assist with various procedures at low to no cost, CSN Veterinary Technician program director Dr. Dennis Olsen stressed that it is important for students to serve the community outside of the classroom.

Dress for Success Sends Out an "S.O.S."

 

A local group that helps underprivileged women acquire business suits is readying for a major annual drive.

Dress for Success Southern Nevada, an affiliate of the international not-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women, is participating in S.O.S. – Send One Suit – Weekend® taking place Thursday, March 1 - Sunday, March 4.

“This annual campaign encourages women nationwide to donate one new or nearly-new interview suit to help another woman enter the workforce and take charge of her life,” said Paige Candee, Dress for Success Southern Nevada founder. “These donations will greatly help women in southern Nevada to achieve self sufficiency.”

Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza & Grill will donate 20 percent of sales from February 7 to Three Square. The donation will be from all five of the restaurant’s locations.

Students Receive Books in Surprise Donation

Spread The Word Nevada adopted an elementary school Tuesday providing the students with hundreds of new books.

Students at Detwiler Elementary School were surprised by the book donation. The nonprofit gave 620 students a book bag and five books to take home. For some children, these were the first books they have had at home.

"It is like another world. It can take you anywhere. It can take you to an island anywhere," third-grader Gabriel Aguirre said.

“You can read them and practice them and learn the words,” third-grader Stanley Wroten added.

United Way of Southern Nevada’s Volunteer Center encourages Las Vegans to make a difference in the community and commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. with a “Day ON, not a Day OFF.”

The nonprofit is seeking volunteers to assist with clean up, landscaping and mural painting at City Impact Center, 950 E. Sahara Ave., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16.

All attendees must register online in order to participate. Volunteers are asked to check in at the City Impact gymnasium at 8 a.m. and dress accordingly, as some projects may occur outdoors. Lunch will be provided. For more information and to sign up, please visit the event page.
