Homeless Summer Shelter Opens Downtown

The brutal summer heat is not far away and those most impacted by hot weather will now have a place to get cooled off.

The Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada opened its cooling center Wednesday morning.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday, men with no where else to go can use the facilities to clean up, get cold water and stay out of the hot weather. A new feature this year is the ability for homeless men to stow their belongings.

"So many of our clients are carrying everything they have, on the streets with them and as they walk around trying to make a change in their life, trying to get employment opportunities. So, here they have an opportunity to be able to come in and check their luggage downstairs," Phillip Hollon with Catholic Charities said.

The center will be open through September.
