Habitat for Humanity Finishes New Home

A Las Vegas family received keys to its new home Monday thanks to efforts by Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas.

Ronitta Hewing and her daughter Kaloni received the keys to their home near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Carey Avenue. With a permanent, affordable home, Kaloni hopes to buy a car and go back to college. Ronitta battled addiction and now spends her spare time helping other addicts become sober. Both women are thrilled to have a home to call their own, especially in time for Thanksgiving.

"My daughter is an excellent cook and she gets to make our Thanksgiving dinner in the house! She gets the kitchen to cook. We get to have our family over. We were in a small little apartment, and now, we get to fill our house with love and joy. It is really good that we got to move in before Thanksgiving,” Ronitta Hewing said.

Habitat for Humanity homes are built with the efforts of the new homeowner and community volunteers. This home was sponsored by Bank of America. It is the eighth home in Las Vegas sponsored by the bank.

"The American dream is still possible and there are neighbors still helping neighbors.  It is not everybody out for themselves. That is proven just in what we've been doing. This is total volunteer work,” Kaloni Hewing said.
