Small business owners interested in doing business with Clark County are invited to attend the fourth annual kickoff of a program that has helped past participants land millions of dollars in new contracts.

The kickoff for the 2011 Clark County Business Development/Education Program (CCBDEP) will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday in Clark County Commission Chambers, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

“Small businesses are a major employer in our state, so they play a critical role in our economy, “ said Tom Akers, program consultant and president of Akers & Associates, Inc. “Many small firms struggle to gain access to government contracting opportunities. The goal of this program is to help small companies increase their capacity to bid and win new business, which can also increase their potential as employers.”

Since the first CCBDEP session, approved by Clark County Commissioners in 2007 and launched in January of 2008, 130 firms have graduated with dozens winning a combined total of more than $6.5 million in new contracts from the County and other entities.

Program participants are required to complete at least 10 out of 12 classroom trainings. They also receive technical assistance, one-on-one and group mentoring from larger firms, and opportunities to interact with purchasing staff and end users.

CCBDEP is funded by the county, administered by Akers and Associates, Inc. and offered at no charge to small business participants.

All southern Nevada small firms that have been licensed for at least one year may apply to participate in the program. The county defines a small business as a non-construction company with annual gross receipts at or below $2 million, or a construction company with annual gross receipts at or below $5 million.

Thursday’s kickoff session will provide an opportunity for participants to hear success stories from CCBDEP graduates, meet county staff, program mentors and partners, receive important program details and requirements, network with fellow small business owners and get questions answered.

Small business owners who wish to enroll are urged to attend the upcoming kickoff session for more information. If you have questions or wish to obtain registration forms, please call Akers & Associates, Inc. at (702) 866-2316 or email clarkcountybusinessopportunity@akersinc.com.
