El Cortez Kicks Off Anniversary with Outdoor Party

El Cortez Hotel & Casino will begin its 70th anniversary celebrations with a wine walk and special viewing of the film “Bugsy” on the Jackie Gaughan Parkway at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27.

Admission to the wine walk is $20 per person, and the event will feature a large selection of wines from California, Oregon, Washington State and Europe. Additionally, Lulu’s On The Move food truck will be on the Jackie Gaughan Parkway to offer guests a selection of dining options.

“Bugsy,” starring Warren Beatty and directed by Barry Levinson, is the story of notorious mobster Bugsy Siegel’s rise and fall in Las Vegas. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Director and Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The film will begin promptly at 9 p.m.

Siegel once owned the El Cortez in the 1940s before selling the property to J.K. Houssels. Downtown Las Vegas pioneer Jackie Gaughan then bought the property from Houssels in 1963, and he owned the legendary hotel-casino until 2008.
