Police Look for Suspects in 2 Murders Near Downtown

LAS VEGAS -- Two murders in two weeks in Downtown Las Vegas have Metro Police detectives looking for suspects.

The valley's latest murder happened at Charleston Boulevard and Third Street on Monday when a man was shot during the day and rushed to University medical center where he died.

On April 19, in the 2800 block of Fremont Street, another person was shot and killed. Police arrested Dustin Bleak, but are still looking for another suspect.

Even with the recent shootings, Derek Stonebarger, the founder of Theater7, said the area is relativity crime free.

"I don't have any concern, like I said, it had nothing to do with the artistic crowd that I run around with," Stonebarger said. "I have a couple businesses and a house in between, so I am always downtown and I think its completely safe, I love it here."

Nathan Benson, 27, is facing charges in the killing of Shanna Fernandez Sunday night. According to the arrest report, Benson's mother was renting a room at the Fernandez home. Benson, who had recently been released from jail, was also staying at the home until he found a place to live. Another renter in the home told police he saw Fernandez and Benson sitting on the couch.

Benson's mother told police, she received a phone call from her son on Fernandez's phone just after midnight and he was upset with her because she had eaten at another family member's house without him.

I-Team: Allegations of Abuse at State-Run Facility for Disabled

LAS VEGAS -- Developmentally disabled patients at a local care center are ending up with serious injuries they claim are coming from staff members. Photos show patients with chipped teeth, bloodied faces and deep cuts.

When police reports begin showing the same state employee names popping up on abuse allegations, the I-Team took notice.

Patsy Hicks looks at the scars her son Mike collected over the years. A head-on car crash left the 26-year-old mentally disabled. But it's a scar on the top of Mike's head that has Hicks most worried.

"I have a mother's love and I don't want anybody to abuse my son," she said.
